Handmade Artist Feature: Molly Mattin

I love shopping different handmade artists online.  There are so many unique items out there, and sometimes it's just a matter of knowing where to look.  Because it's a big BIG shopping season right now, I am going to introduce to you new handmade artists that you can buy gifts from online.  Etsy is a great place to shop handmade locals, and if you are new to Etsy I have put together a post with tips for buying handmade items online this holiday season.

I hope you enjoy the shops included in this series, and please share with friends and family!
Buy handmade.
Buy Local.

Today I am featuring a new find on Etsy:  Molly Mattin

I came across Molly Mattin when I was shopping on Etsy for locals.  When I shop local on Etsy, I type in Ohio because I consider all of my home state local.  When I come across a shop that is in the same city or county as I am, I get a little excited.  Molly Mattin is based out of Springfield, OH which is not too far from where I currently live.  Molly Mattin is a digital artist that specializes in typography within states.  Her work is very eye catching and great for showing your hometown pride.

Take a look at some of her work below:

Front Page of Etsy

Sunday night I was laying in bed with my computer and decided to log in to Facebook.  As soon as I logged in, I saw that one of my blog friends tagged me in a post saying congratulations for being on the front page of Etsy right now!  I pulled up Etsy and sure enough, I see Stanlee staring straight at me in my grey and white dog bow-tie!

I was so thrilled that I woke my husband up and said in a high pitch voice that my grey and white bow-tie was on the front page of Etsy, which was followed by a few squeals and weird happy noises.

It was exciting to see Stanlee on the front page.  He caught the eye of fellow Etsians which resulted in a few inbox messages saying how cute they thought my pup was.  One person even said, "It's like he knows he looks good in this photo!"
I completely agree.

I have never been included in a treasury that made it to the front page of Etsy {at least not that I knew of until now} and it was a really fun experience.  I have always been the overly excited type about little things, and this was definitely one of those moments.

Five Favorites: Etsy Treasuries

Recently I have been included in some pretty amazing treasuries I wanted to share with you all! In case you are unfamiliar with Etsy treasuries, it's a collection of 16 Etsy listings that relate to a specific theme chosen by the curator.

A treasury can be created by any Etsy memeber and it can be very time consuming searching for the perfect items. I have created two treasuries in the past and I remember spending at least an hour on each one. They are carefully thought out and if your treasury is unique and well organized, it can appear on the front page (eek!) of Etsy for all of the shoppers to see that day! That's a big deal for the curator and the shops featured in the treasury! So, if you have an Etsy shop and someone includes your handmade or vintage item in their treasury, be sure to thank them for choosing you!

Here are five of my favorite treasuries I was featured in recently:

Etsy Shopping Guide

In case you missed my article I did for Lollipops blog, here it is.  I hope you find this helpful for shopping on Etsy this Christmas season!

In case you are unfamiliar with Etsy, it is a website that hosts individual stores for handmade businesses, making it easy for you to shop anything and everything handmade in one location!  With the holidays approaching quickly, I decided to share some tips with you when it comes to buying on Etsy.

The first thing I recommend when you find a shop you love on Etsy, is to take a look at their shop announcement and shop policies.

Shop announcement:
Includes various information that the shop owner wants their customers to know about them.  A business description, lead time or networking sites are a few things that could be included in their announcement.

Shop Policies:
Includes information about that individual shops payment forms, shipping, refunds and exchanges, sales taxes and other important information regarding the sale of their items.

The next thing I would look for in the shop would be the location of the business.  One of the great things about Etsy is there are sellers from around the world.  Not only can you find great product made locally, but also something handmade with the style and culture from someone half way around the world!  With that being said, international shipments can take up to 14 days to reach its destination depending on how far the package is going and the customs process for that country.  If you fall in love with an item in Japan, allow an extra week or so for the item to reach you!

Once you have looked over a shop and read their announcement and policies, you can contact (tab found under location) them with any additional questions you might have.  For example, if you would like a tracking number included with your order but do not see if they offer delivery confirmation in their policies or announcement, contact the owner to see if this is something they can provide.

The last step (and sometimes the most important for the shop owner) is to complete the feedback for the shop.  I recommend doing this once you receive your item in the mail.  If you had a pleasant shopping experience, love the product even more in person or just want to thank the shop owner, you can include that in the feedback portion.  You can also include an appreciation photo of your new product in the feedback section or through a private Etsy message!
*If the sale did not go smoothly for any reason please contact the shop owner and let them know any problems or issues before leaving negative feedback.  Hopefully any issues can be worked out or an explanation given to the customer.  Once a feedback (positive or negative) is left for the shop, it can not be changed!!

I hope these steps make an easy and enjoyable Etsy shopping experience for you this holiday season!  There is an unbelievable amount of talent and creativity on Etsy and I recommend you looking there first for unique and quality items to give as gifts before shopping large corporate stores.  While handmade gifts might take a little bit longer to make, they are exciting to give and you know you are supporting small businesses that put a lot of love into their products!

Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Michelle

1)  Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the handmade business
I loved sewing and making cute little items since I was young, but it wasn’t until moving to live in Dubai with my husband late 2009 that I seriously considered making and selling my crafts as a business. I was originally from Hong Kong and I quit my job to become an expatriate wife. For the first time in my life I have time to stop and think about what I really would like to do, and I found my greatest joy from the needles and threads and the little things I make!
I started off making a number of clutch purse and trying to sell them at a local artisan group which has regular art and craft sales event in shopping malls. The group was actually a very good one and I managed to meet my first few fellow artisan friends over there. But since it takes so much time to make a stall full of purses and bags for a good display, my business never really kicked off over there. Me and my husband figured that it would be much better we develop a brand and reputation online, and by then we could go back to the artisan group and meet my fans and potential new fans and show them all my crafts. That's how my husband recommended me to start on Etsy and how it all started.

2)  Describe your studio/work space
Being expatriates in a foreign country, I do all my work in my make-shift home studio with simple (and mostly IKEA) furniture. Compared to Hong Kong, which is well known for expensive homes and high density living environment, the apartment we have here in Dubai is very spacious and comfortable. My work table faces a large floor to ceiling window with a stunning view of the beautiful seaside Dubai Marina residential district, and a glimpse of the Arabian sea and the beautiful Palm Island. We love this place, but at the same time the understanding that it is all temporarily and we might have to move to god knows where at any time is keeping us from actually decorating and making my studio more like an actual work studio.
But I guess it is also good news for beginner sewers - you don't really need a lot of space, furniture or anything at all to start making your hobby a business, you just need to let your imagination run wild!

3)  What is your favorite thing about your craft?
Like every other form of art, designing, sewing and making my purses is a way to express myself in a way that I could not do so in a 9-to-5 job, and I am enjoying every bit of it! Certainly there are also difficult times, like when there are huge urgent orders and I have to sew like there's no tomorrow, but despite all the hardship I still take a little bit of time after making every purse to admire at my creation. It felt so satisfying to create something beautiful, and even more so when it is your idea that gets handmade into a product, knowing full well that it is going into a loving person's hand!

4)  Do you have any tips or advice for beginner sewers?
I have learned so many lessons throughout all these months doing my crafts and trying to make it a viable business. But then, if you are not making any mistakes, you are not doing anything, so don't be afraid to do anything. Just make sure you are always in a good position to evaluate what you have done and make adjustments according to what you've learn. Believe in yourself, your crafts and believe that there must be someone out there who likes what you create. Be persistent, and you will achieve what you want to achieve!

5)  What is your favorite color?
I like every color that is bright and delightful! And if you are a fan in my craft, you know already that I absolutely LOVE polka dots! Polka dots brings life to every color, that's why you can see it on almost every bags and purse I make!

See, isn't she adorable!?!!  I love her inspiration in her answer to question #4:
"Just make sure you are always in a good position to evaluate what you have done and make adjustments according to what you've learn. Believe in yourself, your crafts and believe that there must be someone out there who likes what you create. Be persistent, and you will achieve what you want to achieve!"

Thank you Michelle for sharing your work and what life is like behind the scenes!
